Worry Is A Bully | The Undercover Bully | The Mister Brown Show Podcast

Welcome to this episode of The Mister Brown Show! “Real Talk, Real Life, Real Choices.”

In this episode we are going to talk about the idea that “Worry is a BULLY” and I am going to share Part 1 of a conversation I had recently with someone who heard me speak over 12 years ago! He shares how he was an “undercover bully” and how my “better choices, better life” message helped him change the trajectory of his life.

Quote Of The Day

“Worry Is A bully. It never gives, it only takes.”

I was recently speaking with a friend named Tiffany who makes all of our shirts and merchandise.  We talked about life and got into the topic of ‘worry.’ I started to share a story about how I was laying in bed the other day and heard the AC kick on. I knew that if the AC was turning on at night, it was still hot outside! I started to worry about our electric bill because I knew the AC would be running all day and all night. It’s HOT in Redding, California!

This made me think about today’s Quote Of The Day, “Worry is a bully. It never gives, it only takes.”  Worrying is not going to add anything to our lives.  We cannot allow ourselves to be bullied by this feeling! We have to keep things in context.  For example, the same thing happened to us last year when the AC ran all day and all night in July.  But guess what? We were still able to pay our electric bill.  I have to remind myself to keep things in perspective.

Oftentimes we begin worrying about things in the future or things we cannot control, and it leads to so much anxiety and depression. We allow our worry to build into a “boogie-man” of sorts who we are constantly fighting.  Worrying is not going to add anything to your life or my life. It is only going to take away from us.

I recently did a video for Proclaim Ministries about the famous saying of “oh, that's for the birds” and I talked about how “worrying is not even for the birds!”

There is a passage in Matthew where Jesus talks about worrying. I want to share that passage with you here. Matthew chapter 6, verses 25 to 27 says this:

““Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

This is SO TRUE! We cannot add anything to our life by worrying! When we worry it is like we are paying the “worry man” money, but then never getting anything back (aka the worst investment ever).

My point is that worry is a bully! It never gives, it only takes.  I am not trying to discount that bad things happen or say that they never will happen. However worrying about it will not do anything for you, it will only take your joy, happiness, peace, etc… Never give in to bullies, because if you do, you’ll always get bullied. And it’s a choice! And when you make better choices, you will live a better life. So choose well! Oh yeah!

The Self-Proclaimed, Undercover Bully

Recently, I was able to sit down and have a conversation with Brandon. Brandon was 15 when he heard me speak for the first time at his school assembly, over 12 years ago.  He recently stopped me at a coffee shop and said, “Mister Brown, you changed my life.” That really got my attention and I was thinking, “tell me your story!”

Unlike people who build things and can see the fruit of their work, I don’t often see the fruit of my work.  So when I do hear stories like Brandon’s, it is so encouraging! I often use the analogy of gardening to explain this.  When I go somewhere to speak I am either A) planting seeds, or B) watering seeds already planted by parents and teachers.  Sometimes we have to hear things from someone new for us to truly hear them.  I often tell teachers at schools I visit to not get frustrated if students say things like “Mister Brown said this!” when it's the exact same thing they have been telling their students.  Sometimes it takes other people to water the seeds that we plant.

I want to share with you the conversation I had with Brandon.  Our conversation starts at 11:18 in both the video and audio only links at the top of this page! I encourage you to listen to our conversation about how was a ‘self-proclaimed, undercover bully.”
