Am I Being Divisive? | The Mister Brown Show

Welcome to this episode of The Mister Brown Show! “Real Talk, Real Life, & Real Choices.”  Today I am going to talk about an app called “I’m Curious,” the last time I was in the principal’s office, and the two issues in society that I would fix.

I’m Curious App

I spoke at a camp recently and the last night before dinner we played a bunch of different games. One of the games that we played was an app called “I’m Curious.” The app has 3 different categories, Mood, Gathering, and Who, and each category has different questions.  Under Mood for example, there are categories of Light, Deep, Feel, and Reflective.  Some examples of the questions are:

  • “What do you want to spend less time doing?”

  • “Are you your best supporter or toughest critic?”

  • “If you could fix one issue in society, what would it be?”

I am going to answer that last question today, and I actually have two answers.  First, I would want people to know and understand that we are all created in the image of God. Our worth and value comes from God alone.  I would want society to understand this and to stop rejecting God. Secondly, I want our nation to stop being so divisive.  We are literally divided on everything.  We are divided as families, friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc…

Jumping back to the I’m Curious app; if you click on the Gathering category there are types of gatherings such as family gatherings. Examples of those questions are:

  • “If you could have any job, what would it be?”

  • “Who do you want to spend more time with in your family?”

  • “What would you be excited to do with your whole family?”

Under the last category, The Who category, are questions such as:

  • “Who challenges you and why?”

  • “Who do you admire?”

  • “Who is refreshing to be around?”

  • “Who can you be kinder to?”  (This is a great one to ask your kids!)

This app is a great way to foster meaningful conversations that help build relationships.  I encourage you to check out the app! I don’t get anything from promoting the app, but I hope you get something out of using it!

Last Time I Was In The Principal’s Office

I was in the principal’s office a lot when I was in 9th grade.  One time in particular I had disrespected my English teacher, got kicked out of class, and had to go to the principal’s office. Another time, I had in-school-suspension and I could either a) read a book my teacher assigned, or b) do absolutely nothing, including homework.  I eventually gave in and read the book “Of Mice & Men.”

The moral of the story is that I didn’t always make the best choices in order to live a better life. But I have learned from those choices and want to help other people make better choices so they can live better lives!

My most recent visit to the principal’s office was not because I was in trouble.  I visited Mrs. Emerson to plan for the next year at her school as I have the opportunity to work the students at that school.  During our conversation she said something regarding how divisive our society is and how she wants to be someone who is bringing people together.  That really stuck with me.

I feel like our society is getting more and more divisive. The year 2020 was a divide year with covid, social Justice movements, our responses to covid, and much more.  I have spoken to so many people whose family members and friends still won’t talk to them because of how we responded to covid.

We have to be so careful about what we believe and where we get our information from.  Sadly, the press has proven to be more interested in being the first to report on something instead of being the most accurate.  We hear a story once and then things move on to the ‘next big story.’  For example, the people who are pushing the covid shot. Did you know that over 400 people from the CDC did not get the shot?

I don’t want to be divisive by saying that, I am simply trying to present facts in order to have more meaningful conversations. I think it is so important that we learn from our past so we don’t make the same mistakes again.

I Want Humanity To Win

I think as a society we need to learn how to say when we are wrong. The truth is that we are all going to be wrong at some point in our lives.  So let’s be honest about it!

I want to make sure that this podcast is not being divisive. I want to be able to speak the truth in love. I want to speak the truth in love in order for humanity to flourish.

So let me know if you think I am being divisive or not.  I want to engage the culture in order to have better conversations.  I recently did a podcast about this, but we need to “Agree to disagree, but commit to decency.” We need to treat each other respectfully. We are all created in the image of God, and that is where our value and purpose comes from!

And remember, it’s always a choice. And when you make better choices, you will live a better life. So choose well. Oh yeah!
